Center for Sustainability Welcomes First International Undergraduate Intern, Nila Mahawela from Germany

The Center for Sustainability (CFS) at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) is delighted to welcome Nila Mahawela, an undergraduate student from Germany, as part of its growing global outreach. Nila, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in International Forest Ecosystem Management (B.Sc.) at the University for Sustainable Development in Eberswalde, Germany, will be completing a six-month internship with the CFS, marking a significant milestone as the first foreign undergraduate student to join USJ for an internship experience. Nila’s academic program focuses on sustainable forest ecosystem management, and her decision to intern at CFS reflects her passion for hands-on conservation work. With a strong curiosity about Sri Lanka’s rich rainforest biodiversity and a desire to engage with the practical and legal aspects of conservation management, Nila aims to expand her knowledge and contribute to environmental sustainability efforts. The CFS is excited to support Nila’s academic and professional development during her time with us, and we look forward to the valuable contributions she will make to our ongoing conservation projects.

University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Commercial Bank Partner to Restore Yagirala Forest Reserve

On August 28th, 2024, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) and the Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC entered into a significant partnership to launch a major restoration initiative in the Yagirala Forest Reserve. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed at the Vice Chancellor’s office, with Senior Professor Pathmalal Manage, the Vice Chancellor of the University, and Mr. S. Prabagar, Chief Operating Officer / Executive Director of Commercial Bank, signing on behalf of their respective institutions. The signing ceremony was attended by high-ranking officers from both parties. Representing the University were Prof. Upul Subasingha, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences; Prof. Daham Jayewardana, Head of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science; Dr. G.G.T. Chandrathilake, Director and Senior Lecturer at the Center for Sustainability (CFS); and Mr. Kosala Gunawardana, Curator from the CFS. On behalf of Commercial Bank, several senior officials, including Mr Hasrath Munasinghe (Deputy General Manager – Retail Banking & Marketing), Mr Chithaka Dharmasena (Assistant General Manager – Services), Mr Dushmantha Jayasuriya (Chief Manager – Retail Products Department), Mrs Kamalini Ellawala (Senior Manager – Sustainability, Mr Gayan Wijesingheand Mr Thiyagarajan Sanjeevan (Senior Assistant Manager – Retail Products Department) the Head of Sustainability, also participated in the event. This landmark agreement brings together the expertise of the CFS and the resources of Commercial Bank to promote sustainable forest management and ecological restoration in one of Sri Lanka’s key biodiversity reserves. The Yagirala Restoration Project focuses on the rehabilitation of degraded areas, the enhancement of biodiversity, and active community involvement to ensure sustainable land-use practices. The project’s management plan, which spans the next five years, is structured around three core objectives: biodiversity conservation, research and education, and public and community awareness. Additionally, the project aims to establish a framework for ongoing research and monitoring to inform adaptive management strategies, support educational activities for students, and advocate for raising community awareness about the ecological significance of the forest. This approach will be achieved through multi-stakeholder collaboration, ensuring the conservation of the forest while providing economic and educational benefits. This partnership is poised to pave the way for innovative conservation practices that protect vital natural resources while fostering education and research. Both CFS and Commercial Bank are committed to monitoring the project’s progress and ensuring that the restoration efforts have a lasting positive impact on the environment and surrounding communities. The signing of the MOU marks a significant advancement in Sri Lanka’s efforts to protect and restore its natural heritage. University of Sri Jayewardenepura Signs MOU with North Manufacturing Pvt Ltd for Forest Restoration

The Center for Sustainability (CFS), part of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with North Manufacturing Private Ltd to restore one acre of forest in the Wanniyagama Reserved Forest. The MOU was signed on August 7th, 2024, at the Vice Chancellor’s office, with Senior Prof. Pathmalal Manage, Vice Chancellor of the University, signing on behalf of the institution. Representatives from North Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, including Ms. Ruwani Ishanthi, Sustainability Manager, Ms. Lasintha Dulmini, Executive, and Mr Chamindu Tharaka, Executive, attended the signing ceremony. The Center for Sustainability (CFS) was represented by Dr. GGT Chandrathilake, Director and Senior Lecturer, along with Mr. Kosala Gunawardana, Curator, and internship students from the CFS. The main objective of the MOU is to restore one acre of degraded forest land in the Wanniyagama Reserved Forest. This land, identified for restoration, will be rehabilitated using native species under the joint collaboration of the CFS and North Manufacturing Pvt Ltd. The CFS has a proven track record of success in promoting and disseminating knowledge and practices related to sustainability, particularly through its partnerships with private sector organizations. The project to restore one acre of degraded forest land exemplifies North Manufacturing Pvt Ltd’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability, while also serving as another successful example of a sustainable industry-university partnership initiated by the CFS. The signing of the MOU represents an important step forward for both the University and North Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, as it demonstrates their shared commitment to environmental sustainability and to promoting the restoration and preservation of natural resources. This project will not only restore the degraded land but also create a healthier ecosystem that will benefit the surrounding community and the wider environment.

JUNIOR NATURALIST Program for Colombo International School

“JUNIOR NATURALIST” conservation education program for Grade 6 students of Colombo International School was held on 17, 18 & 19 June 2015 at the Yagirala Field Research and Conservation Education Center. The program aimed at providing hands-on learning about tropical forest ecosystems as a way to inspire positive environmental stewardship. More than 100 participants including students and teachers from CIS attended the 3-day workshop.

Outbound Training for Kelaniya Uni. Students @ Yagirala

An Outbound Training & Nature Camp was held for a group of undergraduates in the ENCM program, University of Kelaniya on 30th and 31st May 2015 at Yagirala Field Reserch and Conservation Education Center. Short Course on Sustainable Forestry and Ecosystem Conservation in Estates Lands held on 2nd and 3rd October 2015 Organized by Center for Sustainability, Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in collaboration with SLAAS Section B . More than 15 Participants from various plantation companies around the country were participated for this two day workshop. Center for Sustainability of Usjp Joins Hands with University of Western Australia for Waste Recycling Educational Program

The University of Western Australia, together with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Moratuwa and the University of Jaffna with collaboration of the organization Waste for Life, aim to develop a unique capacity building educational program that supports development of novel community-based composite waste recycling and manufacturing businesses, positively contributing to local economies and environmental health – specifically clean air, water and sanitation. The project Manager; Prof(Mrs). Caroline Baillie discussed with Prof. SampathAmaratunga, Vice Chancellor of the University about the future plans that will protract this collaboration. Center for Sustainability (CFS) incorporates this project representing the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and looking forward to integrate seamlessly with teaching, outreach, development and research goals of the center.

MOU for Forest Restoration at Yagirala

Memorandum of understanding was signed between the Stretchline (Pvt) Ltd and Center for Sustainability (CFS) of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura to restore seventeen (17) acres forest in Yagirala forest reserve on 3rd February 2017 at the board room of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Under this agreement, approximately 17 acres of degraded forest lands within and outside the University-managed forest in Yagirala have been identified for restoration with native species. Briefing on the project, Dr Priyan Perea, Director-Center for Sustainability mentioned that, the Sri Lankan counterpart of “Stretchline”; the largest elastic manufacturer in the world provides funding for this project under four phases and it is expected to restore 17 acres by the end of 2017. This joint venture exemplifies the environmental commitment of Stretchline (Pvt) Ltd. while marking yet another successful industry-university partnership initiated by the Center for Sustainability. Prof. Sampath Amaratunge Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura signed the MoU on behalf of the University while Mr. Hasantha De Silva Director-Finance HoldCo and Mr. Ruwan Senavirathne, General Manager-Finance were the signatories representing Stretchline (Pvt) Ltd. Dr Prasanthi Gunawardene, Head of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science and Prof. Nilanthi Bandara, member of the Board of Advisors to the CFS also attended this landmark event.

Conservation Education by Sustainability Center at Yagirala Forest for CIS students 2017

“JUNIOR NATURALIST” conservation education program for students of Colombo International School was held on 29, 30 & 31 March 2017 at the Yagirala Field Research and Conservation Education Center for the third consecutive year. The program aimed at providing hands-on learning about tropical forest ecosystems as a way to inspire positive environmental stewardship.
