Stretchline (Pvt) Ltd and Center for Sustainability initiate Forest Restoration at Yagirala

Materializing the MoU between the Stretchline (Pvt) Ltd and Center for Sustainability (CFS) of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science – USJP, restoration of 3 acres of degraded forest in Yagirala Forest was initiated on 5th May 2017. Representing Stretchline (Pvt) Ltd, about 20 delegates including the management of company’s sustainability division participated this initiative. It is expected to restore a total of 17 acres by the end of 2017 under this project. The forest restoration program is implemented under the supervision of Dr Priyan Perea, Director – CFS and Mr. Kosala Gunawardena (Forest Manager of the Yagirala University Forest ) with the technical inputs of Prof B.M.P. Singhakumara of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science.

Center for Sustainability and MAS Active signed a MOU on developing 5 acres of Yagirala University managed forest as a Herbal garden

Center for Sustainability, Department of Forestry and Environmental Science of University of Sri Jayewardenepura and MAS Active signed a MOU on developing 5 acres of Yagirala University managed forest as a Herbal garden on 29th August 2017 at vice chancellor’d office Board room . Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Vice Chancellor signed the MoU on behalf of the University and Charaka Gunawardhana – General Manager, Human Resource and Administration, Lakshman Dayasiri – General Manager, Finance, Nilan Deerasinghe – Asst. Manager, Finance and Rishan Ukwatta – Executive, Environmental Sustainability participated for the agreement signing process on behalf of the MAS Active. Dr. Priyan Perera, the Director, Center for Sustainability, Dr. Prasanthi Gunawardene, Head of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, Prof. Hiran Amarasekara, Prof. Nilanthi Bandara, several other Lecturers of the Department and staff members graced the event. The expected outcome of this project is to remove the invasive species “Dillenia suffruticosa” (Para) that spread across the forest area and transform 2.5 hectares of land (5 acres), to a natural herbal garden that will be enriched in biodiversity. By the year 2017, through reforestation and maintenance, this property could be used as an educational facility as well as an ecotourism attraction. An area within, will also be developed into a “butterfly garden”. Center for Sustainability has been highly successful in promoting and disseminating the knowledge and practices of Sustainability, especially through forging partnerships with the private sector. Restoring and developing a 5 acre degraded forest land as a herbal garden and butterfly habitat, exemplifies the environmental commitment of MAS Active while marking yet another successful industry-university sustainability project initiated by the Center for Sustainability.

The Center for Sustainability (CFS) of Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura has conducted an industrial research: “Impact Assessment Study of Sustainable Agriculture Network (Rainforest Alliance) Certification on Sri Lanka’s Tea Estates”. The main aim of this project was to Evaluate and validate measurable economic, social and environmental benefits in adopting Sustainable Agricultural Network (SAN) certification. Colby College Environmental Management Undergrads visit Yagirala

A Field Workshop on Tropical Forest Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation for undergraduate students in the Environmental Management Program of Colby College, Maine, USA was held at the Yagirala Forest Research and Conservation Education Center on 15 & 16th January 2018. The program was organized by the Center for Sustainability of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. A group of 16 students led by Prof. Philip Nyhus, attended the 2-day workshop.

Higher Certificate Course in Ecotourism and Nature Interpretation

  Synopsis: The Certificate Course in Nature Interpretation and Ecotourism offered by the Center for Sustainability, Department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in collaboration with the Institute of Biology, Sri Lanka is designed to train naturalists, eco-interpreters, eco-guides to deliver authentic, environmentally responsible, and professional ecotourism experience to their clients. CFS receives a GEF grant to restore Madinnagoda Wetland Ecosystem

The Center for Sustainability received a 50,000 USD (7.7Million LKR) GEF grant for a project to restore the Madinnagoda Wetland Ecosystem, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kotte in collaboration with SLLRDC. Under this project, it is expected to improve the wetland ecosystem functionality using a scientific approach while providing benefits to the surrounding local community. The project will open up numerous research and educational opportunities for the students of DFES and FAS, and it is expected to set-up a Wetland Conservation Education Center and a Field Laboratory in collaboration with the SLLRDC to support research activities and on-field water quality testing.
