The Center for Sustainability (CFS) is a body for professional environmental services, research and extension attached to the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science (DFES), University of Sri Jayewardenepura. CFS is a faculty-directed organization that supports the broader efforts of DFES to ensure environmental protection and sustainable development in the country through productive University-Industry linkages and partnerships.

Being the first one of its kind to be established at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the CFS is committed to produce a new breed of responsible stewards of environment through promoting the concept of sustainability among corporate sector, general public, university academia and students, primarily through professional support, education and awareness.

Backed by a renowned panel of environmental experts with proven track records at the DFES, the CFS provide wide array of environmental solutions for the corporate sector.

The University of Western Australia, together with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Moratuwa and the University of Jaffna with collaboration of the organization Waste for Life, aim to develop a unique capacity building educational program that supports development of novel community-based composite waste recycling and manufacturing businesses, positively contributing to local economies and environmental health – specifically clean air, water and sanitation.

The project Manager; Prof(Mrs). Caroline Baillie discussed with Prof. SampathAmaratunga, Vice Chancellor of the University about the future plans that will protract this collaboration. Center for Sustainability (CFS) incorporates this project representing the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and looking forward to integrate seamlessly with teaching, outreach, development and research goals of the center.

The Center for Sustainability of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura Organized a four Certificate Course on Municipal Solid Waste Management from 2nd to 5th September, 2015 at Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Short Course on Sustainable Forestry and Ecosystem Conservation in Estates Lands held on 2nd and 3rd October 2015 Organized by Center for Sustainability, Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in collaboration with SLAAS Section B . More than 15 Participants from various plantation companies around the country were participated for this two day workshop. Forest Management Concept and Planning, Economic aspects of Forest Management, Harvest and Replant Scheduling, Soils and soil conservation best practices, Sustainable Forestry and Forestry Certifications: Goals, Principals and Criteria, Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Protection in Forest Plantations/Estates were key session of the two day short course, Dr. Upul Subasinghe, Dr. Priyan Perera, Dr. Daham Jayewardana, Mr. K. P. Ariyadasa were key resource persons.

An Outbound Training & Nature Camp was held for a group of undergraduates in the ENCM program, University of Kelaniya on 30th and 31st May 2015 at Yagirala Field Reserch and Conservation Education Center. The program aimed at providing hands-on experiences on tropical forest conservation and management, while enhancing the teamwork and leadership attributes of undergraduates.

“JUNIOR NATURALIST” conservation education program for Grade 6 students of Colombo International School was held on 17, 18 & 19 June 2015 at the Yagirala Field Research and Conservation Education Center. The program aimed at providing hands-on learning about tropical forest ecosystems as a way to inspire positive environmental stewardship. More than 100 participants including students and teachers from CIS attended the 3-day workshop.
